Yarmouth’s First Sewer Phase: What It Means For Sellers

Yarmouth has never had a town sewer system. Its long-range wastewater plan builds one in phases over decades, starting with the watersheds of Lewis Bay, Parkers River and Bass River. In 2023, Town Meeting approved funding for the first phase: a new treatment plant on Buck Island Road and sewer lines along Route 28 from the Barnstable line to the Dennis line, plus South Shore Drive, Old Main Street and the side streets between Old Main Street and Route 28 east of Parkers River.

The town expects the plant to be finished in fall 2027, and no one can connect until it opens, which the town expects in early 2028. After that, homes along the new lines have two years to hook up, at the owner’s cost. Each property that can connect will also carry a sewer betterment. The amounts are still being set, it can be paid over 30 years, and it stays with the property when it sells, so buyers will ask about it. (Town schedule as of October 2026.)
